As a general rule, not unless it causes a tire or suspension part to rub against another part. That is unlikely given the miniscule differences in the pads.

I know the difference of pad sizes is only 10mm or so...but my Benz mechanic says that if I went from #3 -> #1 it could lower an inch due to geometry dynamics?

I dont really believe this, but it has given me a blind hope..

Unless your mechanic has specific experience with spring pad geometry, I seriously doubt it. One-third of an inch (10 mm) change in overall spring length yeilding a full inch of change in ride height is a bit much.

Based on the information contained in the MB technical manuals, a change in the thicness of the springpad results in a change in ride height of approximately twice the change in pad thickness.

Ie. Difference in pad thickness is 10mm => Difference in ride height is approximately 20mm

I just checked my pads and I have size 3 at the front and size 1 at the back, which is exactly the wrong way round as far as I'm concerned.

Can the pads be swapped round or are the front/rear fittings different?

Mike.

The diameter of the spring coil is different front and back, hence the spring "cups" welded to the chassis to seat the springs are different sized.

So, one newbie doubt ... if i get the HR CUP KIT and use the
201 321 12 84 - (23mm) 4 bumps for front instead of stock pads ... i'll have less drop yes? Is this a good way of rising a little bit the car when using HR Cup kit ?

front pad change from 1 to 4 - 08-01-2005, 04:11 AM

What an unbelievable rise in my front end when I changed from one dot to four! I could have saved some money by doing this in the first place. I just put in h&r springs and together with my bilsteins, I found it too low. Stance was too aggressive and more like for track use. My previous springs had the same stance and height. I might just use it for a while but I might go for 3 dots at the front. But it really seems that the rise was double that of the difference in pad thickness.

Rise went psst - 08-01-2005, 11:56 PM

Just an update. After the installation, apparently the car settled. The rise that I mentioned was nil. So I take back the 2:1 ratio between the pad thickness and the rise. Its more like 1:1 for me. I installed spacers that help bring up the car to my spec.

Is it possible to tell what size spring pads are on my car without having to remove them? (while they are still on the car)
What are these "bumps" that people are refering to?

Thx

Look at the where the top of the coil springs enter the mounting cups. The skirt of the spring pads are visible at that point and you sill see the "bumps" on the skirt.
