My turbocharged e320 summer project. - 11-16-2008, 08:36 AM

I built this in the summer of 08 after I graduated from high school. It is my first turbo experience and I built the whole thing from scratch. Everything from the turbo used to the engine management installed is a first for this motor.

VR CRANK SENSORS SUCK!!! Forget timing adjustments past 5K rpm.

With a completely stock engine I made 352rwhp and 366rwtq.

The only modification to the engine currently is a 1.9mm cylinder head spacer to lower the compression into the low 9's, high 8's. I have not had the chance to tune with it installed or dyno with it installed.

Greddy RS BOV
Ebay 38mm V-band wastegate

Garrett T3/60-1 Turbocharger
1.9mm cylinder head spacer
352rwhp/366rwtq @ 9psi

Great build and I love the pics (it never hurts to post more!). I would love to turbo the m104 once I get it into my car. Your whole car looks clean too, congratulations on a great build .
p.s. welcome to the rev

Nice build-out, looks like a lot of fun! I wish I'd done something productive with my first summer out of hs. I stayed up all night playing guitar and slept all day.

If a 18 year old kid can luck his way through it, you can do it :D

Im actually starting my layout for my 190e project but I may return my 16v m102 engine in favor of a m104 just so I can see what the M104 can do with head studs and twin turbos.

Nice work! Congratulations on a great build project. One quick question, in the last picture, you changed the exhaust manifold. Was you original design too restrictive?

Nah its still the same one. I guess it looks different when the wastegate dump tube isnt attached. Nice 2.6 btw, just checked your sight, that car is hot.

Thanks. You're right, it just looked different to me without the dump tube. Anyway, very nice job. Do you have any plans to lower your car?

I will probably drop it on vogtlands and KYB's and then start looking to sell the car. I want to build a 3.2 TT 190e so the e320 has got to go.

Can you tell me more about the pipes you used to make the exhaust manifold? What size are they? Were the t-pieces just available off the shelf?

How did you squeeze the round shape down to the more ovale shape to match the port shape?

The manifold pipes are 2" schedule 40 mild steel. I bought them from a plumbing supply store(consquently the owner of a car fab shop 'autolab' was there buying quite a bit more of it than me :D ). To get the ovals I just used a torch, a dremel tool and a ball peen hammer. I think 2" was a little excessive to use with ALL of the cylinders(turbo lag). Probably should have used 1.25 inch on cylinder 6 and moved up to 2" by cylinder 2.

I turned the boost up to 11psi and managed to put the transmission into Limp Home Mode :( Gonna see if its alright, do a fluid change, and look to getting the shift points hardened up.
