results after new fan clutch - 11-13-2008, 05:47 PM

just put in a new fan clutch over the weekend and cooling is a little better now as it doestn go past a 100 degrees since i've been driving it.

my only concern is that the car still runs around 90 degrees in stop and go. and it randomly heats up to 100 sometimes at a red light or if i am slowing down but drops down to 87-95 when i start moving. freeway is fine, its seems like its running at 87.

should i be content with how its running, or is there still something wrong?

i admit the cooling is better now with the new fan clutch, but i still get irritated when it rises to 100. so far it hasnt risen past 100, and even somtimes when it reaches 100, it seems to lower itself in temp even if i'm still at idle.

i can honestly say every cooling component has been replaced or is in good working condition except for all electrical sensor, resistors, and all that. should i take those into account and perhaps change them? and which sensors need to be changed?

also, should i consider a lower temp thermostat(79 degrees) or should i stay with the stock (87 degrees)?

Stick with the stock thermostat.

Is the temp rising with or without AC?

without ac. during random times i'll see the temp go down from 100 back to 87-90 when i park or before i turn off the car. i havent driven it long enough to see it go past 100.

i'm thinking if i should replace the temp sensor going to the gauge and maybe some water wetter.

You should also try to watch the fans. Just lift the hood and stand there as the temp rises and note when everything comes on. If it doesn't go past 100 it really sounds fine to me :)

Tuurn it on, run if for a while in the driveway and record the data, deff. will show you when the fans turn on, off. And at what temp it s when its in sit and go traffic. From there, you could flush the collant and get some water wetter, heard good stuff from them pretty much. But 100 not to bad for stock radiator.

during stop and go its usually within 90-100. watter wetter is probably the next thing to do, as i suppose the gauge and sensor are operating correctly.

i've heard water wetter can shorten the life of water pumps, any truth to that? I've used it before, but now i'm hesitant to throw some in since i heard.

I've got a similar problem with my 16V more than a year ago.

It hovered 90+ during stop and sometimes trigger the critical temp and the aux fan was engaged. It's scary warning coz you didn't want to overheat the engine. It even hits 110k mark a few times.

I replaced the clutch fan, magnet, thermostat, coolant flush but like you said, I was not really that happy because it still goes up to mid 90s on summer stuck on traffic.

I did a trick on the radiator fan and never ever had a problem ever since. My temp now doesn't even go to 90s at all. It stays in sub 80+ even during summer stuck in traffic with AC on yeah!

I did this fix more than a year ago with no issues and loss of power that I know of.

I have new water pump and thermostat that I think helps as well.
