Can someone explain why my ignition key is different? - 10-29-2008, 10:00 PM

Hey guys,

On the 16v I bought to fix up, the ignition key looks like this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MERCEDES-IGNITION-BARREL-FOR-300E-230E-300TE-220E-190E_W0QQitemZ330282531404QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item 330282531404&_trkparms=39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A10|240%3 A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Is this a mercedes part? Why would it have this?

I had the exact same key in my 190E, so I bought a tumbler keyed to the VIN# from the dealership. That key tumbler + weird shaped key is what the parts guy call "shop tumbler", which is what they use to temporarily fix a sticking tumbler until the coded one arrives.

Very interesting! I'll have to go to the dealer and see what up. Thanks!

Haha yeah I am in the same situation. I have not gotten around to going to the dealer to buy the tumbler keyed to my vin. IIRC correctly the dealer has to install it, they wont release it through regular parts. I could be wrong.

i purchased a new tumbler by vin earlier this year and it came with a new tumbler and key. it was delivered in one biz day and was about $175. if your doors havent been tampered with, then all should be good. let me know if you need further help.

The gal that owned my car before me handed over five keys, a dead giveaway sign that the car had been rekeyed. I have an ignition key that will open the driver's door and start the engine, but won't open the trunk. A couple keys that only open the trunk and two that don't work on anything.

Lately, I've noticed that telltale slight hitch in the ignition tumbler, signaling that it's going to need replacement. I hope that the VIN based replacement will work with all the locks, including the trunk.
