Thumbs down peice of ssssshhhhhiiiiittt!! - 09-09-2008, 01:21 AM

so iv got new problems, and need to be pointed in the right direction...

here are the symptoms.

1.upon start up,warm or cold, i blow white smoke, but quickly goes away after a couple revs
2.i have to add coolant every 100miles or so
3. very rough idle when warm or cold
4. when around 4-5k rpm's in 3rd gear there is a slight chugging of power
5. if i rev the engine all problems kinda go away

-did i blow a headgasket?
-whats the part number for the thin(higher compression) headgasket?
- being that the block is slightly bored, does the gasket need to be trimmed?
-how much(on average) it it to get a head cut/grinded?

iv had issuses in the past with this car and vacuum leaks(specifically the under intake/throttle body boot); could these problems be a sign of vacuum leaks? if so, what the part number for a new boot?

headgasket.

did you already check oil/water reservoirs? very important...you don't want a mixture (oil/water) running through either system very long.

It more than likely is a head gasket, but the idling problems could be associated with a vacuum issue if your 190e is anything like a 190d.

The initial puff of smoke is a good clue . . . accumulated coolant being burned off along with the oil.

If you're really lucky it's the intake manifold gasket. But it's probably the head gasket.

^ that i wouldn't know maybe you could ask racing for that question.

A DIY is going to be tricky. Where talking about a few days of work. Do you have the space to do it?

Do you have fellow rev members on speed dial to call for help?

Have you gone through the haynes repair book twice over?

Do you have the tools such as a cherry picker?

The reason i ask is once you start removing stuff and end up running in to a road block you mite end up taking it to a mechanic trying to pieces back all the unknown parts.

i dont have a cherry picker, i wish! but i doubt ill have to pull the block. from just fingering through the haynes manual quickly; it looks like all i really have to do is pull the header, unbolt the intake manifold, take off the valve cover, straighten and mark the cam and crank in position one, take off the chain, remove the head bolts, pry off the head... then ill have to get it straightened, and reassembly.... but of course that is easier said than done

i hope not....oh god i hope not... i dont think i need to do the rails or guides, there is less than 10k miles on the engine....

Count on getting new headbolts - do not re-use them. If you have a catalytic convertor, count on replacing that and your 02 sensor as well as glycol does a number on those....If the glycol has made it's way into the oil, then count on dropping the oil pan, cleaning the shit out - especially out of the oil pickup....do two oil changes afterwards to make sure all of the glycol is out of the oil passages in the block. Do it right, do it once...
