how important is this? I just noticed while looking down in my engine that the top of this shock is disconnected. I dont know how long its been like this, but I havent noticed anything weird happening. I guess I bought it like that or the top bolt popped out recently.

the lower shock absorber connects to the belt tensioner device with 2 bolts, obviously it is to absorb some of the vibration generated by the device and gives the tensioner an added support, if the hinge is still there, just bolt it back to the tensioner, one of the bolts cant be put in unless you loosen the tensioner device or remove the bracket (at least this was my experience). shouldnt be a problem since every thing is ok so far but you need to put it back.

I ran without a shock for 1.5 years but always had a small rattle at idle with my foot on the brake. Shock probably has some bearing on the lifespan of the tensioner and i hated the sound so I got one but I don't think any real damage has been done to your car.

I didn't want to start a new one. I just got a new belt shock in the mail and I had a question, should it expand open? Or should it compress to stay close?

It's fully compressed in the closed position and when i try to pull the shock rode open it doesn't react or do any thing. Is that correct?

It's brand new.

Sorry Chris, but I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know that when I replaced my tensioner on my old 2.3 I went without the shock for 2 years before I sold the car and never had any of the trouble listed above.

I wonder if this could be the solution the the engine vibration on my parent's car? The engien idles at 750 but shakes a lot. Shakes a little bit more when brakes are applied.

Hi Chris, I had my belt tensioner shock replaced a few months ago, because it was making a rattling noise (or allowing the tensioner to rattle). My mechaninc showed me the replacement shock, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't pressurised to move in any direction. In other words, it's not like the hydraulic bonnet (hood) strut, which pushes outwards (or the reverse). It just absorbs the vibration, so it should resist movement in either direction.
