2007 Top US Car Thefts Cities - 05-06-2008, 06:45 PM

For 2007, the Top 10 Metropolitan areas with the highest vehicle theft rates are:

1. Modesto, CA (5 - 2006 Ranking)
2. Las Vegas/Paradise, NV (1)
3. San Diego/Carlsbad/San Marcos, CA (11)
4. Stockton, CA (2)
5. San Francisco/Oakland/Fremont, CA (12)
6. Laredo, TX (22)
7. Albuquerque, NM (13)
8. Phoenix/Mesa/Scottsdale, AZ (4)
9. Yakima, WA (9)
10. Tucson, AZ (10)

Each year, NICB analysts review vehicle theft data obtained from the National Crime Information Center for each of the nation’s MSAs. MSAs are designated by the Office of Management and Budget and often include areas much larger than the cities for which they are named. For example, the Modesto MSA includes the entire county of Stanislaus and other municipalities in addition to the city of Modesto.

The rate is determined by the number of vehicle theft offenses per 100,000 inhabitants using the 2007 U.S. Census Population Estimates, the most current figures available.

WTG San Diego for that move up the rankings!

Are total cars stolen going down because of the difficulty of stealing a newer car vs. an older car? Perhaps because the volume of cars has increased you wouldn't notice a decline in such a range. Do they figure the ratio of cars owned : cars stolen per year?

Funny thing, a friend of a friend had a brand new Toyota Prius when it first came out and it was stolen from his highschool parking lot. I mean, the guy who stole it must have been really good b/c he would have had extensive knowledge of electronics.
I dont know if I like every car with these ignitions... no more slasher films where the gal has to fumble with the key. What will movies be like in the future when there is a getaway scene?

But Carlsbad? Weird.

Number 3 this year is not good enough though we did move up 8 spots. Now I just need another storage for all the extra car parts.

The more striking stat . . . nobody's mentioned it so far . . . but it seems that the East coast, Southeast and Midwest are off the map on this survey.

Slackers.

On the most stolen, Dodge Caravan....why?
Other than the Sundance, I can understand the rest, maybe if you are into tuners, but the Caravan thing stumps me.

If you have either the Caravan or a Voyager the parts are interchangable on both models and will work for numerous year variations.

Civic SiR in Canada is the same as the US Civic Si, and I think the Si in Canada is the same as the US EX Civic.
SiR in Japan has a b16a and about 10 more hp than the US Si

If you steal a car in the east coast where are you going to go with it? The police have cracked down on chop shops and the mob here. And there aren't any borders to run too except Canada and they don't want anything American up there :) You can't even get out of NYC without passing a handful of toll booths, what thief wants to deal with that crap?

CA, TX, NV and AZ are perfect. You can make a run for Mexico or you can put it in a shipping container and it will be lost in the millions of containers that go through the CA shipping yards each month on its way to ex-Russia most likely. The police are to busy with serious crime duty to worry about your precious vehicle and there is so much road and real estate for a car thief to get lost in.
