i heard alpine type s and infinitys are good if you're on a budget. i would get mb quart 4" comps and amp them, then get some cheap rears.

depends on what your going for, if your on a budget run them off a good head unit. You wont get the best out of them but they will sound good.
If your willing to spend the money amp them and get a sub as well. if not run 6x9s they will give you decent bass if your looking for a bit more.

Don't go too cheap on the speakers, you will regret that. Im not a big audio guy and I bought a system because when I bought the car the idiot who owned the car before me had a system that was smoking and speakers were blown out. So I thought I just wanted something that would just make noise. Found out what my engine noise was way better than the shit those speakers put out. I bought I real nice head unit (planned on upgrading the rest of the system some day....) but shit speakers and wow it shows. I bought the shitty Rockford Fosgate 4in and some Kenwood 6.5s in the back. There is ZERO bass and WAY too much high end, to the point where it hurts. The bass that is there just makes the speakers pop. Its really pathetic. Spend over $100 of each set of speakers ( onlinecarstereo.com usually has good deals, spend $100 each there, not MSRP). If thats too much you can probably skimp on the 4in in the front, as no matter what you do a 4in speaker isn't going to give you much low and mid-range, but in the back get something decent to offset the highs of the 4in in the front.

As far as a head unit goes, get something with a decent power output, mine is 2 years old now and I haven't looked much into head units sense, and the main reason I bought mine was that it had a high output voltage to an external amp and I thought I would do that at some point. Not sure the model anymore but it is a Panasonic and has a nice dark brushed metallic look and goes nice with the rest of the car.

A good head unit (pioneer/premier) with built in crossovers/filters will keep the interiors, no matter how big or small, from being able to receive bass-tones.

How can you pick on RF??????

Rockford Fosgate fell off the face of the earth, in my mind, when they moved their manufacturing facilities over seas. At the same time they started adding plastic, aesthetic purposes only, pieces to their stuff and they also started getting beat out in the audio contests by Alpine I think.

I have a subwoofer from their era of good stuff, but haven't had the money to build a system around it.

Mind you, what I said in my previous post was for a sub $100 product, i am sure they make decent stuff (I probably won't buy it again, I have become a JL guy and if I ever do get the money I will deck out the car in JL audio equipment). But you have to realize that every company makes shit, even JL, and I bought RF's shit because it was cheaper than other peoples low end crap.

In the audio industry the low to midrange quality stuff you pretty much get what you pay for. High end stuff is for audiophiles, and I think you pay a lot more for less of a dramatic improvement.

Just opinions,

Jim

main problem is oem speaker size and position, in my 92' there are only 4 speakers, 4" in the dash and 6" in the back. I would love to have 6" JL splits in the front they would be amazing but I havent got the space and cant find the door trims with the speaker holes in them here in Aus...

you hit the nail on the head dan, the stock holes are to small and to fue. the card board back deck dont look like it could hold any good 6x9 with out sagging, and the metal brace under wouldent clear the polks i was gonna cut in. you can get pioneers for like $60 a pair anyware, run those four of the head unit and one powered 10 it the trunk if you enjoy the lower hertz.

If you just want some decent sounding noise, spend a little bit more on the head and the speakers. My brother has on older, fairly cheap system that actually sounds pretty good. (I think MB Quart in the back and Diamond Audio in the front). If you go with cheap speakers and a woofer all you will get is bass, which for a lot of people is all they want, but I prefer a decent all around system than one focused on bass. But thats just my opinion. (I was complaining about the lack of bass in my car because there is legit none. If you throttle the bass up way high the speakers just start to pop and rattle like shitty speakers will)

i would have just cut it. i had old blaupunkt overdrive dvc 6x9s in there. mounting depth was around 3 1/4" with a 20 oz. magnet. around the med box opening, you can add layers of mdf to fit an infinite baffler sub.

I was thinking about fitting 6" in the front but having them under the 4" holes, I havent looked into this, theres a good chance there wont be any room under there although I do remember seeing some space last time I took some bits out...
The main reason is that the 6" in the back at low volumes drown out the 4" in the front until you turn it up, might need to ajust my gains but the 6" are a lot more powerful
