I installed a 143amp alternator in my 1993 190E 2.3. -
07-29-2003, 06:10 PM
I installed a 143amp alternator in my 1993 190E 2.3. I got the alternator from Pat. (Thanks Pat)
US-spec headlights are very dim. I've recently installed euro headlights and I plan on adding a relay to make them brighter. I want to make sure that I get more power to the headlights so they will be as bright as possible.
I also have the Factory Alpine Active Bass System which has an amplifier for the speakers. Before the conversion, when I turned up my radio too high, the lights, inside and outside, would pulse with the beat of the music as most the power was used by the stereo.
My 190E originally had a 70amp alternator. I swapped pulleys and rotated the rear housing so the wiring would line up. It fits and works perfectly! I have not upgraded the cable to my battery yet, but it seems to be working fine for now.
I don't have any pictures yet or any power measurements but I will try to get those this week.
I learned about this mod from "GSXR" at MercedesShop.

The donor car must be a 1996-1999 S or SL class with a V8 (SL500, S420, etc.) Others may work but I don't know what years & models, and most others are smaller (100-120A).

Yes, this will definately stop the headlights flashing with the music. The stock alternator should say what amp it is on the top of it. I think the 2.6 has a 70 amp also.

capacitor -

I would personally just throw a Cap in the car, then you wont have to worry about any of the power being sucked to go to the stereo......A buddy of mine has 2 10's in his doors and 2 15's in the trunk and he just bought a Cap for like $150, amazing difference his lights dont fade at all anymore. even when we turn it to the point where it hurts to breath , but thats just my opinion..

The alternator makes the headlights a little brighter also and is great if you're going to run high wattage lights in your euros
