I think you're talking about the hole for the mixture control. It's just a hole to allow access to the adjustment screw below.

It sits above here, right (that's the adjustement screw)?

It sits above here, right (that's the adjustement screw)? 1985 190E, 280,000km, White, Blue Cloth Interior, Kenwood/Alpine/Blaupunkt Sound System, Yokohama AVS ES100 Tyres, full SecondSkin Sound Insulation, Motorola Voice Recognition Car Kit, Navman F20 GPS Navigation, all Royal Purple Fluids (except Engine Oil, it was getting a bit too expensive at US$80 every few months. And now, diff Oil is gone as well: Mechanic Replaced Diff Seal and I'm sure he wouldn't have used RP)
